20 Years of SPoT
In 2013, the Skatepark of Tampa will be celebrating their 20 Year Anniversary. Part of the celebrating has already gotten underway with 93 ‘Til Infinity, a 4-part artshow series at The Bricks. 93 ‘Til Infinity features 20 different artists creating artwork from their own personal experiences at SPoT through the years. Part 1 took place a few weeks back and Sean Orr was on hand to snap some photos (see below). Skatepark of Tampa’s photos are here. Part 2 of 93 ‘Til Infinity is coming up on Saturday, November 17th at The Bricks and also includes the release of Moat Water, which is SPoT’s 20th Anniversary Brew from the folks at Cigar City Brewing!
Also, to help celebrate SPoT’s milestone, every Wednesday from now until the Tampa Pro in March, the RIDE Channel will air a new episode of Skatepark of Tampa 20 Year Experience. 20 different Pros, Ams, and industry leaders share their personal SPoT stories and experiences with you. Check out the Intro with SPoT founder Brian Schaefer and Episode 1 with Stefan Janoski below.

Tunes | OFF! @ The State Theater, St. Petersburg, FL – 09.25.12
Punk rock and skateboarding…skateboarding and punk rock…synonymous. I grew up skateboarding and listening to bands like: Minor Threat, Circle Jerks, Black Flag, JFA, Agent Orange, Bad Religion, Social Distortion, etc…as I believe, most of us did. The message, the culture, the independence, are all one in the same. But, I don’t need to tell you that. Anyway, although both punk rock and skateboarding have both become more mainstream over the years, the passion in what has created who we are today is still as strong as ever. Not only has skateboarding come full-circle, but punk rock music has as well. The new generation of kids are as diverse in their skateboarding as they are in their music selections. More and more kids are skating pools, bowls, ditches, and vert ramps and listening to bands like Agent Orange, and Black Flag, and the Ramones…like it was the 80′s. Even their trick selection reflects this…I’ve seen more inverts and bonelesses in the last year than I have in 20 years.
Let’s also not forget these guys that are skating and playing music well into their 50′s these days with the same intensity that they always have. Keith Morris is the perfect example of the music aspect of that. Morris formed Black Flag with Greg Ginn in 1978, and after only a short time, left Black Flag to form the Circle Jerks with Greg Hetson. Seven albums, 15+ years, and a hiatus later, OFF! is formed. OFF! is Keith Morris (Black Flag, Circle Jerks), Dimitri Coats (Burning Brides), Steven McDonald (Redd Kross), and ex-professional skateboarder Mario Rubalcaba (Hot Snakes, Earthless, Rocket From The Crypt). OFF! came to be after a failed attempt to breathe life back into the Circle Jerks in 2009. Coats had been working as the producer on the album, and he and Morris already had several songs written, so they formed OFF!. OFF! made their live debut at the 2010 SXSW Music Festival in Austin, TX and in typical punk rock fashion, their first release was a 7″ vinyl EP called 1st EP. In December of 2010, OFF! released First Four EPs and in May of this year released their first full-length self-titled album.
I missed OFF! the last time they came through town, so I was determined not to let that happen again this time around. OFF! played with Negative Approach and Double Negative at the State Theater in downtown St. Petersburg, FL on Tuesday night and I had the opportunity to shoot some photographs. Enjoy. -Nicks

OFF!, Cerebral Ballzy, Feral Babies, & Retox @ The State Theatre
Keith Morris is a punk rock legend, and needs no introduction. Keith’s latest band OFF! played the State Theatre in St. Pete last weekend, and our friend Zac Tomlinson was there to snap some sick photos! Feral Babies, Cerebral Ballzy, & Retox opened and Keith also did a little “Meet & Greet” at Daddy Kool Records before the show. Check out the video below for Crawl off of OFF!’s First Four EP’s featuring 2010 Thrasher Magazine “Skater of the Year”, Leo Romero. Skateboarding and Punk Rock…like Ebony & Ivory.

Have Gun, Will Travel, The Semis, and DJ Marcos Udagawa this Friday, March 11th at The Local 662. If you are not partying in Tampa for the 17th Annual Tampa Pro, make sure to check out this show. Have Gun, Will Travel is hands-down one of the best bands in the Tampa Bay area and they are getting ready to leave for SXSW and then they are going to be doing a little touring. The Semis also rule! 9 pm…$8!
The Beauvilles w/ Josh Roberts & The Hinges and The Living Arches, Friday @ New World
The Beauvilles (Tampa, FL), Josh Roberts & The Hinges (Columbia, SC), and The Living Arches (Tampa, FL) are playing the New World Brewery this Friday, March 4th. I saw The Beauvilles last Saturday night at BAAMO’s “One For The Road” and they were incredible! Do it…doors are at 9pm and the show is only $7.
BAAMO’s “One For The Road” @ Dave’s Aqua Lounge
Have Gun, Will Travel
If you find yourself in Austin, Texas for SXSW in March, you should be slapped if you miss this:
BAAMO’s “One For The Road” is Tonight
Tonight is BAAMO’s “One For The Road”, which is the send-off party for Tampa Bay bands headed to the SXSW Music Conference in Austin, Texas in March. Confirmed bands for “One For The Road” are: The Beauvilles; Have Gun, Will Travel; The Human Condition; Poetry ‘n Lotion; Rebekah Pulley & The Reluctant Prophets; Ronny Elliott. Saturday, February 26th, 7 pm @ Dave’s Aqua Lounge. 100% of your suggested $10 donation goes to the bands to cover their travel expenses to and from Austin. Support local music!
Flogging Molly “Unofficial” After-Party @ The Bricks Tonight!
Flogging Molly is playing at The Ritz Ybor tonight and after the show, The Bricks is hosting the Flogging Molly “Unofficial” After Party. Matt Hensley, Flogging Molly’s accordion player, also happens to be one of the most influential street skateboarders of all time…which gives me an idea for this week’s “Time Capsule Thursdays”.
Punk and Ska Tonight at The Local 662
Get on over to The Local 662 in downtown St. Petersburg tonight for some local punk rock and ska. Tampa’s Shakemode, St. Pete’s O.G. ska band Rude Squad, and Marco Island’s Sheffield Crew are going to put on one hell of a party for you. 21 and over is $6.00 and under 21 is $9.00.
Event Reminder: Celebrate your “Un-Birthday” at The Bricks Tonight
Tonight, January 28th, The Bricks and Kick Start My Art are throwing you an “Un-Birthday” party…unless, of course, your birthday is actually today. Then, if that’s the case, you should come out and celebrate all of your friends’ “un-birthdays”. 16 of the Tampa Bay area’s best artists were selected and given free reign to create whatever they choose for the “Sweet 16″ Art Show. The show gets started at 9 pm and there will be food & drink specials, and a DJ to keep the party going into the wee-hours of the morning.
Matt Butcher and The Revolvers @ New World Brewery Friday
Friday night at New World Brewery, Matt Butcher and The Revolvers come in from Orlando to play a show. Clearwater’s Al Torchia and The Tattered Saints and Atlanta’s Young Goodman Brown get the show started. The show is 21 & up and tickets are $7 and are available at the door.
Joan of Arc w/ Pillars and Tounges & Zillionaire @ New World Brewery
Tomorrow night, Chi-Town’s own Joan of Arc (Tim Kinsella, ex. Cap N’ Jazz) and Pillars & Tounges hookup with Tampa’s Zillionaire for a Thursday night show at New World Brewery. Tickets are available at Daddy Kool Records, Mojo Books & Music, www.ticketweb.com, or at New World Brewery. Tim Kinsella will also be doing a solo acoustic set at Mojo Books & Music in Tampa at about 5 pm.
Woody Pines Tonight!
Get on over to Ella’s Americana Folk Art Cafe tonight for Woody Pines! I saw these guys the last time they played Ella’s and they were fantastic! Woody Pines is out of Ashville, North Carolina, although frontman, Woody, spent some time totally immersed in the music scene in New Orleans. When Woody Pines is puttin’ down that viper jazz, swinging ragtime, and country blues sound, you can feel not just the music, but the culture as well. So, slide on over to the bar, get yourself a shot of whiskey and slip back into a simpler time in American life. Oh, and the show is FREE! Check all of the details here.
Have Gun Will Travel @ The New World Brewery Tonight!
Well, apparently tonight is the night for live music in Tampa Bay! Have Gun Will Travel, Will Quinlan and The Diviners, Whiskey Gentry, and Pete Stein of Truckstop Coffee are playing at the New World Brewery. This is a serious lineup of local hard-hitters right here! Tickets are available at the door for $8! Best damn 8 dollars you will ever spend!
Also Tonight: Drive By Truckers @ The Ritz
Athens, Georgia’s Alt-Country sextet Drive By Truckers are playing at The Ritz Ybor tonight. Drive By Truckers are on tour promoting their 9th studio album, Go-Go Boots, which drops Feb. 15th! Check all the details and purchase tickets here or at the door.
